MOHALI: The case of theft of gold jewellery worth Rs six lakh and cash from a Phase 9 house on September 17 was solved after Mohali Police claimed to have arrested the domestic servant Dinesh Kumar Yadav and recovered the jewellery and cash from him, on Thursday.
The police presented the thief before the media and handed over the recovered jewellery weighing 1.2 kg and Rs 94,000 cash to Tikka Bajinder Singh Sodhi, at whose house Dinesh had started working since August 22.
According to the Mohali Police Chief HS Bhullar, Dinesh had been working as a domestic help at some relatives of the family and was employed on their recommendation. Due to his soft-spoken and humble behaviour he won the confidence of everyone in the family.
Sodhi''s wife Harjot has a jewellery shop in Hotel Shivalik View and the lake and there always is some amount of jewellery in the house. Dinesh got to know where Harjot Kaur, Sodhi''s wife, kept the keys to the cupboards and on September 17 when there was no one in the house except Sodhi''s bed ridden father, he conveniently opened the cupboards and walked away with the jewels and cash.
Bhullar said that since the family has not verified Dinesh''s antecedents but knew where his relatives in Punjab lived police raided all the locations. He said that after leaving the house Dinesh first went to Ludhiana where his brother-in-law lives and alerted him that police would come to him. He then went to Delhi and told his brother to go somewhere as the police might look for him. After this he went to his wife''s village in Gorakhpur district.
Dinesh is in police custody and would be presented before the court on Saturday. Bhullar said that the police was hopeful of finding out about other such criminal characters in the city through Dinesh.
